Learning languages? help?

My father passed away a little more than a year ago due to unfortunate reasons. However he was a very smart man. He was born and raised in Mexico City and had amazing opportunites to travel and studied at Le Cordon Bleu in France for about 6 years. He knew about 5 languages fluently. I know just English with a fair amount of Spanish, he tried to teach me when I was younger but I wouldn't listen. I want to learn more and understand it better, what helps?
