Can I work in some sort of bakery at 17?

My mom suggested it because I will be going to Le Cordon Bleu next year for a patisserie course and she thinks it would be good experience, which it would, but why would they hire someone without a degree in baking? WOULD they? It would be great if they would, but I think she's incorrect. What do you think?
